Charlestown Nevis

Today we ventured into Charlestown, the government, business and tourist center of the island. At the town square is a memorial for the World War I soldiers.

We arrived just before lunch and walked the town, the school children were taking a break and they walked through the streets with their school uniforms on. The office workers were dressed in suites, ties and skirts, a big upgrade from what you will see in Washington business attire. As much as we would have liked to take photo's, it is not very polite, so we offer a few photo's of the downtown area.

In high school I did a report on Alexander Hamilton, I found his life very interesting and he probably had the clearest vision of The United States than any other founding father. The Nevis Assembly meets on the top floor and there is a Nevis Museum below. Next door was The Hamilton Museum. I never imagined that I would get to see his birth place when I penned that high school report.
He opposed Slavery very early on

The sentiment during the time of the revolution was the United States was to be an agricultural society, Alexander Hamilton saw the future of manufacturing. He pushed for a modern financial system as the first Secretary of the Treasury.  Walk in the Footsteps of Alexander Hamilton.

Above are the ruins of the Hamilton Estate, a plantation that was owned by Alexander Hamilton's family. There was a couple at the site with Lois and I, they were taking photo's by this machinery. He came down very excited and noted that this was old steam engine technology and it was imported from Scotland. We asked them where they were from, and yes they live in Edmond's.

We decided to stop horsing around and get down to business. Digging deeper into the sciences, we went to the rum plant. Below is a great history textbook that is recommended reading, now back to the research.

Lennox works here part time and had the keys to the operation. We did a little tasting and hope to bring a few bottles of the sipping rum back home. Their featured product is Clifton Estates.

Okay, who left the gate open, Latoya chased the sheep out of Rum's of Nevis property.
